Overview
The Jindeng Temple Grottoes are located in Yuxiaguan town, Pingshun county, Changzhi, Shanxi province. Initially constructed during the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420–589 AD), the site covers an area of 125 square meters.
Architectural Layout
The grottoes are arranged along a cliff, forming a sequential layout of seven courtyards from east to west. The design progresses through courtyards, starting with the first courtyard at the entrance, which houses 16 caves. The niches are numbered sequentially from east to west.
Artistic Highlights
The most remarkable feature of the Jindeng Temple Grottoes is the stone-carved halls, showcasing figures such as Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Vajrapanis, Heavenly Kings, Arhats, and characters from Buddhist stories. These sculptures, characterized by their delicate craftsmanship and elegant forms, epitomize the distinctive artistic style of the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD). The grottoes hold significant artistic value as exceptional works from the final era of Chinese grotto sculpture.
Cave Features
Cave 1: This cave features twice-carved recessed walls, straight lattice windows, and octagonal eaves pillars with basin-shaped bases. The column heads support brackets carved with "one dou and two sheng" patterns and leaf-shaped ornaments under the eaves. Inside, a U-shaped altar is sculpted with the "Three Great Beings" as the central figures, flanked by eight Bodhisattvas and two Vajrapanis. Small Buddha sculptures adorn the walls, though many are weathered, with some remnants displaying Ming and Qing artistic styles.
Caves 9 and 10: Located in the northwest corner of the sixth courtyard, these caves feature triadic Buddha sculptures seated side by side on the main wall.
